6m DX in the Es season - which mode?

We are in the run-up to the Es season in the Northern Hemisphere. The best months are May-July although Es can occur at other times too.

Last Es season I kept a watching brief using JT65 and spotted some amazing 6m DX including a whole string of Japanese stations early one morning on 6m. Of course, this was before FT8 appeared on the scene.

This season I am not sure of the mode to try. Probably FT8 as the take-up on this mode has been so great.

Considering I just use a vertical V2000 omni antenna, I was very excited with the results last year.

Quiet 6m morning

Apart from G3RCE (GDX tropo) there has been no EU DX here on the band all morning. There is some doubt that OZ7IT, in the early hours, was Es, but if it was Es it was indeed very early at 0438z. I shall stick with 6m for a while to see what happens.

UPDATE 1328z:  Right out of the blue CN8LI (2113km 5W) was spotted at a strong -11dB S/N . Magic Band does it again!

UPDATE 1420:  Now CN8LI spots my 1W ERP  at a massive +5dB S/N! During the afternoon we exchange spots 14 times at colossal strengths even though I run 1W ERP only.

6m Es and GDX

Well 6m "came good" today with Es to  IK1WVQ and CN8LI as well as GDX in the form of G8JNJ/A (184km) G4FFC (45km) and G4BRK (134km).  I get the feeling that daily Es is now more likely until later in the summer. Tonight I shall have to go QRT as we have thunder forecast, so I need to disconnect antennas. Today has been a good day on 6m.

It is interesting to see just how much variation there is on Es signals.  For example, my 1W ERP signal level with CN8LI varied by 27dB over lunchtime. Strongest was 0dB S/N and the weakest -27dB S/N.
