St Ives near Cambridge - NOT amateur radio

Few people think of the attractive town of St Ives not far from Cambridge. If you live in the UK, you probably think of St Ives in Cornwall.

For us, it is a free guided bus ride from Cambridge of about 20 minutes. The guided bus uses the route of the old Cambridge-St Ives branch railway. The buses run quite fast on special concrete tracks in quiet countryside with no traffic.

St Ives (Cambridgeshire) - NOT amateur radio

This is a delightful town we visited last Friday on the guided bus from Cambridge. The photo shows the view from the bridge in the centre of the town.

St Ives (Cambs) - NOT amateur radio

As mentioned before, a nice bus ride from Cambridge is along the guided busway to St Ives.

Guided busways are a novel idea: in some parts of Cambridge buses run on ordinary roads. Then the bus runs on guided tracks with no other traffic using the path of a long closed railway.

The route is past lakes and takes about 20 minutes. On the guided part, the bus can go pretty fast and the driver can take his or her hands off the steering wheel. St Ives is an historic place on the banks of the river Great Ouse. The town is associated with Oliver Cromwell.

St Ives, near Cambridge - NOT amateur radio

Many people in the UK know of St Ives in Cornwall where the G7 recently met. Few are aware of the other St Ives near Cambridge.

The run from Cambridge to St Ives on the guided bus goes past lakes and is very attractive. Sit back and enjoy the run. Of course, if you are a UK Old Age Pensioner with a bus pass this can be totally free!

St Ives has some great history and is a good place to visit. This photo was posted on 365project earlier today by a friend.

Floods - NOT amateur radio

Yesterday we went from Cambridge to St Ives (Cambridgeshire) on the guided bus. Many of the fields were flooded and the river was far higher than normal. One car-park (see photo) was totally under water. I was not expecting this at all.

St Ives (Cambridgeshire) - NOT amateur radio

My wife made this collage of our trip last week to St Ives (Cambs).

It makes a good summary of our trip, which is why it is included here.

At the top is the famous bridge and at the bottom is the market.

St Ives (Cambs) - NOT amateur radio

As reported yesterday, we went to St Ives on the guided busway. We noticed this pub as it had such a great display of real flowers outside. It is about 200m from the river.

St Ives (Cambs) - NOT amateur radio

Today we went to St Ives in Cambridgeshire on the guided busway. It was a great journey, free with our bus passes! St Ives is a decent UK market town by the river. Today was market day.

Guided Busway - NOT amateur radio

Today, my wife and I took the guided busway up to St Ives, Cambridgeshire. With our bus passes the trip was free.

The sun shone and we ate out inexpensively in the cafe at the URC church which is in the heart of the town. Food, service and prices were excellent.

St Ives is on the River Great Ouse and has some fine buildings.
